Do I Need a Hearing Aid?

Having trouble hearing those around you? A hearing aid could help.

Hearing AidWhile it might seem obvious enough to know when you require a hearing aid, you might be surprised to learn that hearing loss is often subtle enough and gradual that sometimes people don’t realize they are dealing with hearing loss until much later in life. Our team of ENT Physicians and Audiologists in Stafford and Fredericksburg, VA, is here to share classic signs that it might be time to have your hearing evaluated, as well as who might benefit from wearing a hearing aid.

How much does your hearing affect your daily routine?

You might not be aware of this on a day-to-day basis but asking yourself these questions may help you figure out whether you are dealing with some degree of hearing loss and whether you should schedule a hearing test in Stafford and Fredericksburg, VA:

Q. Do you find that people often mumble around you?

Q. Do you have to ask people to repeat themselves often?

Q. Is it difficult to understand people on TV or on the radio unless you turn up the volume?

Q. Is it difficult to understand what people are saying in noisy environments such as restaurants?

Q. Do you feel like your hearing affects your personal or social life?

Q. Do you find yourself avoiding social gatherings or withdrawing from conversations?

If you said “yes” or even “sometimes” to the majority of these questions then it’s time to schedule an appointment with an audiologist. The sooner you receive a proper diagnosis the sooner we can help you to begin understanding those around you more clearly. Of course, since it takes time for your ears to adjust to a hearing aid, the sooner you begin wearing a hearing aid after experiencing hearing loss the sooner your ears will adapt.

Will a hearing aid restore my hearing?

This is a commonly asked question and it’s important that you understand that a hearing aid will not be able to restore your hearing; however, what a hearing aid does do is amplify certain sounds to make it easier for you to understand what people are saying, particularly in loud or noisy settings. While it won’t be able to correct your hearing it can significantly improve your ability to hear those around you to improve your quality of life.

If you are experiencing hearing problems and have yet to have the issue checked out then it’s time to call Ear, Nose & Throat & Facial Plastic Surgery Center of Fredericksburg for an evaluation. We offer two offices in Fredericksburg and one office Stafford, VA.
